Festival opening
19.9.
This year, steirischer herbst’s opening ceremony takes place in Lesliehof, followed by a vernissage of its main exhibition at Neue Galerie Graz. The opening day closes at Helmut List Halle with a performance and party. Come to Graz and be part of the festivities!
Performances
Major newly commissioned performances punctuate the opening days and continue throughout the festival. They deal with various facets of national identities and myths.
National museums are haunted houses. Often established by empires and states that long ceased to exist, they served to construct and confirm myths of victories and victimhood. Today, they are the place where former delusions of grandeur and petty grievances of the past are still at play.
A centerpiece of steirischer herbst ’24 is the exhibition Horror Patriae. In the historical building of today’s Universalmuseum Joanneum, which hosts the Neue Galerie Graz, it imagines an alternative museum of national complexes and perverse imaginaries.
The exhibition combines works and artifacts from the Universalmuseum Joanneum’s various collections with works by contemporary artists (including numerous commissions). Organized into several fictitious departments, it tells stories that depart from local myth but reach out into the broader world.
Werner Fenz Grant for Art in Public Space
Clara Ianni presents the work that won her the Werner Frenz Grant for Art in Public Space. In addition, an exhibition sheds light on Werner Fenzʼs archive and a multiyear project of the Graz-based curator on the topic of the homeland.
herbst Deathmatches
2024 is a year of heated political debates. In four “deathmatches,” steirischer herbst offers takes on some of the biggest issues in Europe’s present election cycle, with audience voting for the most persuasive argument.
herbst cabaret
For the third year in a row, steirischer herbst turns to cabaret and its gritty, gutsy social criticism. Six performances present a mix of burlesque, street chanson, stand-up, and macabre poetry in the intimate setting of Forum Stadtpark’s basement.

Spaces of Freedom

Open spaces are spaces of possibility. Music as a form of expression and entertainment needs these spaces to develop. ORF musikprotokoll 2024 asks: What do restrictions and expansions of free spaces do to music, its creators, and last but not least, to us as listeners?

Die Welt von Morgen
8.10.–11.10.
Hamlet says: “The time is out of joint,” and he is right. A war is raging in Europe that refuses to end. The European Community was once created to permanently prevent such acts of aggression. But what has become of this great European peace project?
